THERE’S NOTHING CUTE ABOUT CUTICLES Like we discussed with our pedicures, that hard-looking skin at the bed of each fingernail is called a cuticle. Cuticles act as a protector of your nails, but their upkeep is vital to prevent tears and infection. Cuts within cuticles are often painful and mainly arrive because the cuticles are simply too overgrown. With a manicure, it’s often asked if you’d like your cuticles cut or pushed back. Either are fine to keep your nails growing strongly, but if your nails have a cuticle build-up, cutting is the way to go. Your nails are soaked in lukewarm water to soften the cuticles, then they are cut and oiled to prevent fungus. JAGGED NAILS BE GONE Are you a nail biter? Do you suffer from hangnails more often than not? Are your fingernails so long that look a different color from all of the dirt trapped underneath them? All of this gets resolved with your manicure. As previously mentioned, your nails are soaked to soften. However, some salons may file your nails dry to smooth out their shape, then soften them with lukewarm water and re-file and buff them for continuity. You aren’t obligated to have some wild shaped fingernails, just rounded along the shape of your finger. And hey, if you are a nail biter, your manicures may end that nasty habit, considering you wouldn’t want to chew off what you just paid for. TO PARAFFIN OR NOT TO PARAFFIN In colder weather, certain hands tend to chafe and chap. If you’re a victim of these cold rough hands (or even just have frequent callouses), a paraffin treatment might be the way to go. This happens during a manicure (sometimes for an additional cost, other times for free), where your hands are dipped into a heated pool of gentle paraffin wax. Once dried, the paraffin is peeled, sloughing off all of the dead skin on your hands, leaving them soft and smooth.
